Rack Installation

Pre-installation Preparations

Review each of the areas below to confirm that all environment prerequisites are met:

  • Facilities, power and network connector specifications

  • Network preparations

  • Other rack integration requirements

    • subdomain delegated to Oxide for rack service and instance DNS

    • SSL certificate chain and key for the Oxide subdomain

    • SAML-based identity provider for rack user authentication, if applicable

    • firewall settings configured to allow the rack to access all integration points (i.e., NTP, DNS, identity provider)

You will also consider how you want to set up the first Silo and its identity provider integration. See Rack Configuration for the complete list of attributes involved.

Preliminary Product Inspection

Follow the uncrating and installation procedures in the Rack Facility Setup Instruction that comes with the rack.

Perform the following visual inspection:

  • For each server sled, shine a light into the cubby to look for any physical tampering or damage

  • Confirm that cables are properly connected

  • Check that the rear connectors of the sleds appear intact

  • Verify that components intended for hot-service are all present and fully latched in place

Confirm that there are no “off” or blinking LED lights on the switches and sleds.

Check Transceiver LEDs

Once the uplink connections have been established, verify that the LEDs are lit for the plugged-in transceivers.

An off or blinking LED indicates a physical connectivity issue. Here are some possible causes:

  • Dirty or improperly connected fiber

  • Unsupported transceiver model (the list of supported transceivers can be found here)

  • Faulty transceiver

If the issue is due to a bad connection, cleaning and reseating the transceiver may resolve it.
